School Based Youth Health Nurse
The role of the School Nurse is to promote positive health outcomes for young people, their families and the school community. Having a nurse in the school provides the opportunity for young people, their parents and members of the school community to access a health professional in the school setting for matters relating to health and well-being. The nurse provides support to the school community to address heath and social issues facing young people and their families in order to help young people make a safe and healthy transition into adulthood. The school nurse is involved in class health promotions and confidential appointments.
The school nurse can assist with information including:
- Diet
- Physical activity
- Drugs, Tobacco and Alcohol
- Sexuality
- Sexually Transmitted Infections and contraception
- Puberty body changes
- Self image- body image
- Mental health- Stress, self esteem, depression, self harm
