Kingaroy State High School will welcome Senior students from across the South Burnett this May as the host school for the Ryda Road Safety Education Program, delivered during National Road Safety Week.

On 19 and 20 May, Year 11 students will take part in a series of interactive, full-day workshops designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and strategies to stay safe on the road. Kingaroy SHS students will participate on Tuesday 19 May, with students from Nanango State High School, Saint Mary’s Catholic College and St John’s Lutheran College attending on Wednesday 20 May.

Kingaroy State High School is proud to once again serve as the regional host for all Ryda workshops, continuing a long-standing partnership with Road Safety Education Limited. Since 2010, more than 4,000 Kingaroy students have participated in the program, which has reached over 900,000 young people across Australia and New Zealand over the past 25 years.

The Ryda program is the nation’s largest and longest-running road safety resilience education initiative. It focuses on developing social responsibility, building cognitive skills to manage distractions, and empowering both drivers and passengers to make safer decisions. Workshops are professionally delivered by trained local facilitators, with support from Queensland Police Service and local Rotary clubs.

Road trauma remains one of the leading causes of death and hospitalisation among young Australians, with novice drivers at greatest risk—particularly in their first year of unsupervised driving. Programs such as Ryda play a vital role in addressing this by challenging students to reflect on their choices and build safer habits before they get behind the wheel.

In addition to hosting student workshops, Kingaroy SHS will also serve as the venue for a free Driver Coach session for parents and carers of learner drivers. This workshop will be held on Tuesday 19 May from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in the Kingaroy Performing Arts Centre (Markwell Street entrance). The session provides practical tools and strategies to help families support young drivers through the learning process and promote safer driving behaviours.

The Ryda program is supported by the Queensland Government through the Community Road Safety Grants scheme, along with corporate sponsors and community partners including Rotary. A recent independent evaluation confirmed Ryda as a best-practice education program, highlighting its strong alignment with behaviour change models, high-quality delivery and positive impact on student awareness and decision-making.

By hosting these important workshops, Kingaroy State High School continues to play a key role in supporting the safety and wellbeing of young people across the South Burnett community.
